Capsule, gummy or powder: what each format can physically carry

The sachet is part of the specification

Format looks like a preference and is mostly arithmetic. A gummy, a capsule and a scoop of powder can each hold a different quantity of active material, and the gap between them is large enough to decide what a product can contain before anyone chooses an ingredient.

An old problem, and the three questions every format has to answer

In 1834 a Paris pharmacist, Joseph Dublanc, and his contemporary François Mothes patented a way to seal medicine inside a gelatin shell. The purpose was not delivery. It was taste.

Two-piece hard capsules followed, and their sizes were standardised by manufacturers rather than by any regulator. Every format argument since has turned on the same three things: how much fits, whether it survives being made, and whether anyone keeps taking it.

The arithmetic that decides everything

Capsules are sold by volume, not by weight

A size-00 capsule holds about 0.91 ml. A size 0 holds about 0.68 ml, a size 1 about 0.50 ml. Those are the published dimensions and they do not vary between suppliers.

Which is why the same capsule holds 450 mg of one powder and 820 mg of another

Fill weight is volume multiplied by the tapped density of the powder. At densities typical of supplement ingredients — roughly 0.5 to 0.9 g/ml — a size 00 holds somewhere between about 450 mg and 820 mg.

A light, fluffy botanical extract and a dense mineral salt fill the same shell to different weights. Nobody is being dishonest; the powders are simply different.

Capsule sizes are volumes, and the weight follows the powder
Figure 1 Capsule sizes are volumes, and the weight follows the powder Published capacities run from about 1.37 ml at size 000 down to about 0.21 ml at size 4. What that holds in milligrams depends entirely on the density of what goes in. Standard two-piece capsule dimensions as published by capsule manufacturers.
Capsule size Volume Typical fill at 0.5–0.9 g/ml
000 1.37 ml about 685–1,230 mg
00 0.91 ml about 455–820 mg
0 0.68 ml about 340–610 mg
1 0.50 ml about 250–450 mg
3 0.30 ml about 150–270 mg

What two capsules carry

The three large ones

Worth doing with real numbers. Three actives at 300 mg, 400 mg and 200 mg — alpha-GPC, lion's mane and L-theanine on the Weal Focus panel — come to 900 mg before anything else is added.

The mineral weighs more than its label figure

Then the mineral. Zinc picolinate is about 21% zinc by molecular weight, so delivering 15 mg of elemental zinc takes roughly 71 mg of the salt. B12 at 500 mcg is half a milligram and rounds to nothing.

That is close to a gram of material before the flow agents that let a powder fill evenly; our own manufacturing specification puts the finished fill at about 510 mg in each of the two capsules.

Nine hundred milligrams, before the excipients
Figure 2 Nine hundred milligrams, before the excipients Three actives at 300, 400 and 200 mg reach 900 mg on their own. The mineral salt weight and flow agents put the total near a gram — about 510 mg in each of two size 0 shells. Weal Focus manufacturing specification: about 510 mg per capsule including excipients.

What a gummy carries

Most of the mass is structural

A gummy weighs roughly 2.5 to 4 g, and most of that is structure: a sweetener or polyol, a gelling agent of pectin or gelatin, water, acid, flavour and colour. The active fraction is what is left.

Across the manufacturers we gathered quotes from, the realistic active payload is about 50 mg to 500 mg per gummy. At two gummies a day that is roughly a gram of headroom for everything in the formula.

Where the ceiling never binds

For a low-dose active the ceiling never binds. Vitamin D3, K2, B12, folate, biotin, melatonin and a mineral at RDA scale all fit inside it with room to spare, and a gummy is a perfectly good vehicle for them.

Most of a gummy is the gummy
Figure 3 Most of a gummy is the gummy A 2.5–4 g gummy carries roughly 50–500 mg of active material. The remainder is sweetener, gelling agent, water, acid, flavour and colour. Manufacturer quotes gathered when we specified Weal Focus, 2026.

What a powder carries

Grams, which is why some ingredients have no other option. Creatine is studied at 3–5 g a day, collagen at 2.5–10 g, and 200–400 mg of elemental magnesium as glycinate means 1.4–2.8 g of salt.

The limit is not volume, it is taste

Nothing stops a scoop holding five grams. What stops it is that berberine is severely bitter, that mushroom extracts are earthy, and that a drink nobody finishes is not a delivered dose.

This is the original problem from 1834, unchanged. The capsule was invented to hide flavour, and the powder format hands that problem back to the person drinking it.

Three ceilings, an order of magnitude apart

What survives being made

Gummies are cooked

A gel mass is heated before depositing, and heat-sensitive actives degrade in the process. The manufacturing answer is an overage — dosing extra so the label amount survives — which raises cost and complicates stability testing.

Some things cannot be a gummy at all

Some enzymes are destroyed by stomach acid, which is why those products are enteric-coated. A gummy cannot be enteric-coated. It dissolves in the mouth by design.

Water, and the ingredient that attracts it

Alpha-GPC is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture from the air, clumps, and loses its handling properties. In a gummy it sits in a matrix that is substantially water by definition.

In a capsule the answer is packaging: a foil-lined pouch and a desiccant that stays in the pack. That is why the sachet is in there, and why it is there by design.

The sachet is part of the specification
Figure 5 The sachet is part of the specification Hygroscopic actives draw moisture from the air. A foil-lined pouch and a desiccant are the packaging response, and both are chosen at formulation rather than afterwards. Alpha-GPC hygroscopicity is a documented handling property.

The one place this has been measured

An analysis of 25 melatonin gummy products sold in the US found 22 of them inaccurately labelled, with melatonin quantity ranging from 74% to 347% of the amount declared (Cohen et al., JAMA, 2023).

Read at its real size: that is one analysis, of one ingredient, in one category — not a verdict on every gummy made. It is also the most direct evidence available that a cooked, overaged, water-containing matrix is harder to hold to a number.

What each format costs to make

Capsule Gummy Powder
Active payload about 450–820 mg per size-00 unit about 50–500 mg per unit grams
Typical minimum order 1,000–2,500 units 5,000–20,000+ units Low; often tub-filled to order
Lead time 2–3 weeks stock base, 5–7 weeks custom 10–16 weeks Short
Stability work Straightforward Overages, water activity, pectin-versus-gelatin Moisture and clumping
Shipping Light, stable Heavier, melts in transit Bulky
Taste Hidden by the shell Has to be pleasant Has to be tolerable

Higher capital, slower iteration and less room, all at once. At scale a gummy line is an excellent business, and that is why the minimums are set where they are.

The advantage gummies genuinely have

Adherence is not a consolation prize

The advantage is adherence, and it is not a small thing. In a general-practice sample, about a third of patients reported difficulty swallowing tablets or capsules (Schiele et al., European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, 2013; n=1,051).

A formula taken every morning at a modest amount beats a better formula abandoned in a drawer. Any argument about payload that ignores this is arguing about a product nobody is taking.

What our own buyer research showed

We counted format language across 3,600 posts in twelve supplement-related subreddits over 120 days. "Gummy" appeared in 15 of those posts, and difficulty with pills in three.

The caveat matters more than the number. That sample over-represents the research-driven buyer, and gummies sell in enormous volume in supermarkets and on social platforms to people who never post about supplements at all.

Three questions that settle it

  • What does the dose weigh? Add the milligrams up first. That number rules formats out before anything else is considered.
  • Does it survive heat and water? Enzymes, probiotics and hygroscopic compounds each answer differently.
  • Will it be taken every day? The honest answer here overrides the other two.

Where we stand

Weal Focus is two size 0 capsules a day, sixty in a foil-lined pouch with a desiccant. The gummy version was considered and shelved, because 900 mg of actives plus the mineral salt sits at the very top of what two gummies can carry, and alpha-GPC is hygroscopic in a matrix that is substantially water.

If the formula were vitamin D3 and K2, the decision would have gone the other way. The payload table above shows why. What ends up printed on the panel afterwards is covered in how to read a Supplement Facts panel in about sixty seconds, and the case for stating every amount separately is in what a proprietary blend actually hides.

The format follows the formula, not the other way round
Figure 9 The format follows the formula, not the other way round Nine hundred milligrams of actives sets the format before any preference does. A different ingredient list would produce a different pack.
