The One Number That Separates Mushroom Supplements

On a shelf of lion's mane products, almost nothing is comparable. One pack says 1,000 mg, another says 500 mg, a third says 8:1 extract, a fourth says 30% polysaccharides. None of those numbers can be set against any of the others, and a buyer holding two boxes has no way to decide between them.

One number would fix that. It exists, it is measurable by a standard assay, and it is the figure this desk would look for first. So we counted how many products actually print it. The answer is why this piece exists.

We counted the labels, and almost none of them state the number

Method, so the count can be checked. The National Institutes of Health maintains the Dietary Supplement Label Database, a public archive of marketed supplement labels. On 14 August 2026 we pulled every on-market label matching lion's mane, removed duplicate listings by brand and product name, and kept the 392 carrying a lion's mane or Hericium ingredient row. Text quoted below is as the database records it; a pack in hand is always the final authority.

The plant-part figures are, if anything, starker. Fifty labels (12.8%) state fruiting body and no mycelium. Ten (2.6%) state mycelium. Seven state both. The remaining 325 — 82.9% — do not say which part of the organism is in the capsule.

Since a survey naming nobody is not checkable, here is what some of the fourteen declare — including the ones doing it properly, which is the more useful half of the list.

That is a genuinely good list, and it is fourteen products out of 392. The figures run from 20% to 45% — itself informative, because a spread that wide is what a stated percentage lets a buyer see.

"Polysaccharides" is a real measurement of the wrong thing

The commonest standardisation figure on a mushroom label is a polysaccharide percentage: honestly obtained by a real assay, and close to useless for comparing products.

A polysaccharide is a chain of sugar units. That is the entire definition — a category about as specific as "protein". Starch is a polysaccharide. So is glycogen, and so is cellulose.

This matters because of how the material is grown. A product grown on rice, oats or sorghum can post a high polysaccharide number a large part of which is the grain. The number is not a lie; it measures a category containing the thing a buyer wanted and the thing they did not.

Beta-glucans are narrower — glucose chains with a specific set of linkages, in fungi a beta-1,3 backbone with beta-1,6 branches, and the bond pattern is the identity. Starch is an alpha-glucan: same sugar, different linkage. The standard assay measures total glucan, measures alpha-glucan separately with a starch-specific enzyme, and subtracts. Adding grain cannot inflate the result, because the grain is measured and removed.

That is why one figure carries information the other does not, and why this desk treats a polysaccharide percentage as a near-miss rather than an answer.

Real examples of the near-miss, from the same database: a Vitamin Shoppe listing records "standardized to 55% Polysaccharides (550 mg)"; a Biotech Nutritions listing, "standardized to 10% Polysaccharides"; a SuperSmart listing, "8:1 standardized to 30% polysaccharides". All three disclose more than most of the shelf. None tells a buyer how much beta-glucan is in the capsule.

Fruiting body and mycelium-on-grain are two materials, and the second one has a fair case

The fruiting body is the mushroom — the part a forager would recognise. Mycelium is the fine root-like network it grows from, usually cultivated on sterilised grain.

The grain travels with it. Mycelium cannot practically be separated from the substrate it has grown through, so standard practice is to mill the whole colonised block, and the grain becomes part of the powder.

This is disclosed, and disclosed accurately. Some labels are unusually candid: one Oregon's Wild Harvest listing records "fruiting body & other parts — grown on a substrate of non-GMO, organic sorghum (milo)", a MUD\WTR listing records the plant part as "mycelial biomass" cultured on organic oats, and Host Defense listings record "Lion's Mane Mycelium Extract". None of those is hiding anything; they say what they are.

The fair case for mycelium is worth making properly, because a page finding nothing good in the alternative is an advertisement. It is faster to grow, cheaper, and frequently produced domestically rather than imported. It is also a genuinely different life stage that produces compounds a fruiting body does not, and researchers study it in its own right.

The objection should stay narrow: it is about grain arriving in the capsule uncounted, not about mycelium as a material. A mycelium product stating a beta-glucan percentage has answered it entirely.

An extract ratio describes a process where a specification was needed

"8:1 extract" reads like a specification and is not one. It means eight units of starting material were reduced to one unit of extract — a manufacturing step, with no regulatory definition fixing how it must be calculated.

Three things it leaves open:

  • What went in. Eight kilos of fresh mushroom and eight kilos of dried mushroom are very different starting points, and mushrooms are mostly water.
  • Which part went in. A ratio applied to colonised grain concentrates whatever was in the grain along with everything else.
  • What came out. Extracts are commonly carried on maltodextrin or another flow agent, and the ratio does not describe the finished blend.

A ratio is not dishonest. It is a description of a process, offered in the place where a composition figure was wanted. One of the listings above illustrates the point neatly: an ALLMAX Essentials row records "30% polysaccharide, 4:1, QCE 2,400 mg" — three numbers, none of which resolves how much beta-glucan is in the capsule.

What a lot certificate settles, and what it does not

A printed percentage is a claim until a document supports it. That document is a certificate of analysis, issued per production lot.

A request that works, sent to any brand's support address:

"Please send the certificate of analysis for lot [the number printed on the pack]. I am looking for the beta-glucan result and the analytical method used to obtain it."

Two sentences, and the reply is informative whatever it says

A real certificate carries a lot number matching the pack, a test date, the named analytical method, the result, and the laboratory's identity. A third-party laboratory is better than the supplier's own, though a supplier certificate is not worthless.

What often arrives instead is a specification sheet — what the product is meant to contain — rather than a result for a batch. Or a certificate with the lot field empty. Or a polysaccharide figure where a beta-glucan figure was requested. None is a refusal, and a small brand may genuinely not hold the document. The reply is still information.

And a certificate settles less than people assume. A beta-glucan percentage is a compositional specification, not an outcome: it says what is in the capsule and nothing about what happens after it is swallowed. On that second question the evidence is thinner than the category's marketing suggests. A 2026 randomised trial in 109 adults aged 40 to 75 with self-reported cognitive difficulty reported improvement in visual attention and working memory over eight weeks at 2 g daily (Daoust et al., 2026; n=109 — a preprint, described here at that weight). A single 3 g acute dose in 18 healthy adults aged 18 to 35 produced no significant effect on composite measures of global cognitive function (Surendran et al., Frontiers in Nutrition, 2025; n=18).

Publishing the second one is the point. A category that only ever cites the trials that worked is not reporting on itself.

Two limits, stated because a page arguing for checkable claims has to be checkable itself. The beta-glucan percentage is printed from the certificate for the actual lot, so it is never printed ahead of the paperwork — and it is a floor rather than a promise about any single capsule. And 400 mg of a well-specified extract is a statement about contents, not a claim about what the contents do.

The three-second version

Find the word after the species: fruiting body, or mycelium. Find the standardisation: beta-glucans, or polysaccharides, or nothing. If it says beta-glucans with a percentage, ask for the lot certificate. That sequence separates 14 products from 392.
